"Stellar Siblings: How Multiple Star Systems Form"
時間/地點: 2022-03-19 10:00 [Online Talk]
摘要:
Our Solar System contains only one star, but many stars like our own Sun are born with a stellar sibling. These “multiple star systems” shape a number of cosmic processes, from the rate of supernova explosions to whether and how planets form. Exactly how stellar siblings form remains mysterious, since they are born within distant, dense clouds of gas and dust that hide their birth conditions. During the past 10 years, high-resolution observations have finally revealed the earliest stages of forming multiple star systems. In this talk I will showcase recent images of these young systems. I will show how astronomers use computer models as a laboratory to reconstruct the birth of stars and predict their evolution millions of years into the future. Finally, I will discuss what stellar siblings have to teach us about the birth of our own Solar System.
