The discovery of gravitational waves from binary black holes in 2015 and the subsequent discovery of an electromagnetic counterpart to a neutron star merger in 2017 signalled the potential of combining electromagnetic and non-photonic messengers. No coincident signals have been found since, and no further convincing kilonova candidates have been discovered in wide-field surveys. I will review the progress in the field and what we might expect in 2023 and beyond with upcoming instrumentation developments on the ground and in space.
