The history of star formation in our local neighborhood is written in nearby clusters and ongoing bursts of newborn stars. However, interpretation of these observations is limited by notorious uncertainties in evaluating ages of pre-main sequence stars. In this talk, I will discuss how stars evolve in the pre-main sequence and the uncertainties that undermine our age estimates. I will also present results from recent high-resolution ALMA surveys of protoplanetary disks in nearby star forming regions. These disks have a diverse range of substructures and properties, however placing them on an evolutionary sequence will require improvements in pre-main sequence stellar evolution.
