摘要:
The advent of global networks of telescopes and dedicated time-sensitive surveys such as the Palomar Transient Factory has opened up new horizons for monitoring sources for time variability. In this talk, I will review a few different timescales for variability in a wide range of contexts, ranging from the work with asteroids and solar system objects available from small telescopes, to evidence for changes in cosmic abundances of Carbon, Oxygen and Deuterium in quasar absorption lines. As part of the effort to expand the Palomar Observatory into a global network of telescopes dedicated to time-domain astronomy and astrophysics, I will also outline two particular projects - the global campaign to monitor Jupiter in support of the upcoming Juno mission, and a new program for undergraduates at Caltech as part of the Zwicky Transient Factory proposal.
